July Intentions

Half of 2020 has gone by and I think everyone would agree that it isn’t like anything we planned for when the year began. Since I’ve been social distancing for major part of the year because of the pandemic and global unrest which this year has seen, it’s easy to say there’s no point in planning because no one knows what to expect. This way of living however, I have realized leads to days which spill into each other, weeks and months which fly by without notice. When I look back, it makes me wonder what I did with all my time. Hence, I feel that there is value to live life intentionally even when there’s so much uncertainty around rather than just go with the flow. So here’s a list of intentions for the the first month of the second half of the year, July:

Balance

When I was in school, we read poems regularly and analyzed what the poet meant with every line, word and punctuation. But after I left school I stopped reading poems actively because other things like Netflix lured me. I have picked it up again recently because I have found that it’s a way for me to slow down and be mesmerized by how beautifully emotion can be captured with words.

Among Other Things

Starting a new series of posts here on this blog –

I haven’t been posting a lot recently. But I plan to change that soon. I have been rethinking the direction of this blog. When I started this blog last year I wanted to just post book reviews and travel stories. But, I also do a lot of things outside my day job which I wanted to write about. I didn’t know how to structure it and where to share all of this and what readers of this blog would make of this. When I named this blog – The Tiny Storyteller, I didn’t really know why I was naming it this except that I really liked the name. I have realized that everyone’s life is made of moments and when we share these moments with each other they become stories. After a lot of thought, I decided that instead of making separate posts for the stories in my life which aren’t about books, travel or write ups I’ll start a series of posts here called – Among Other Things. In this series I’ll share what I enjoyed in the past month and stories from my life. Here are the roundups for May. Hope you enjoy!

A Fleeting Encounter with London

Before I tell you about my time in London, I think my story about how I got to go to London is definitely worth sharing. After having not received my passport back in time from the UK consulate in New York to speak at a conference in Bangalore, I was sure that I would not like London since its consulate in the US was a very poor representation of the country. In a desperate attempt to see if I could get my passport back in time to join the rest of my team in London, I wrote an email to a random email address I found in a Yelp review expressing my frustration with the UK consulates process. I didn’t expect it to work considering many had written but never heard back from them. Yes, applying for a UK visa in the US is the worst possible experience I have ever had. But, hey! the 500 words email which I wrote as an advocate to all those in my shoes, received this reply on December 3rd.

The Beautiful Château de Versailles

I was in Paris last month for two weeks. This was my second trip to Paris and having visited most of the must-visit places in Paris during my last trip, there were only a few places left on my list. Versailles (pronounced vehr-”sigh”) was one of them. A visit to Versailles is a day trip since it takes about 6 to 7 hours if you want to explore this famous residence of the French Monarchs. Versailles is a half hour drive from the city center. You can take the train which is very convenient or you could also catch a cab or uber. But if you are a solo traveller, the train is more budget friendly.  Read More »
